Springfield – Started by Paul Simon after he left the Senate, the Paul Simon Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale recently hired its fourth Director, journalist John Shaw, who spent 26 years covering Congress.

Shaw is also a native son of Illinois, who has come full circle in returning to Illinois, and now using his years of covering Congress, and witnessing the breakdown of civility in our national political discussions, as he leads the Paul Simon Institute under his tenure.

Shaw talks about his vision for the Institute and some of their initiatives to educate students about government and making it work. We discuss the need for more civility from those in government, and in our national conversations, and in the growth of money in politics.
