Truckers, Fuel Taxes and Transportation Funding

From the State Capitol – As some in Illinois government now argue we need to increase the taxes on fuel, Don Schaefer. Executive VP of the Midwest Truckers Association, gives us the breakdown of the taxes already included in one gallon of fuel, and how the layering of Federal, State and local taxes on fuel means much of the revenue paid at the pump does not go to transportation projects, despite what many think.

While the motor fuel tax has not been increased in many years, other taxes have increased – and those taxes are then also taxed by adding a sales tax on top of the fuel taxes! Understanding some of what we pay when we stop at the pump, is a good foundation for the coming conversations on whether Illinois should be raising the taxes motorists pay at the pump.
