From Springfield, GOP State Senators hold a press conference to denounce a bill that would enact a progressive tax in Illinois, a tax the senators say would further drive businesses and citizens out of the state.
Illinois’ income tax is a flat tax, that applies the same percent of taxation to all incomes. The majority of states — 34 – have a progressive income tax, as we do at the federal level, where higher income earners pay a higher percentage of taxation on their income.
The Democratic nominee for governor, Mr Pritzker, has made changing Illinois from a flat-tax state to a progressive income tax a major part of his campaign, although he has not said what he would want to see as the highest percentage of tax on income.
Before a Progressive Income Tax would be possible, the Illinois Constitution will have to be changed. It is questionable if that is politically possible.
