From Springfield: We go one on one with Brooks Simpson, author of “Ulysses S Grant, Triumph Over Adversity: 1822-1865” the first volume of a two volume biography of the General that lead the nation to Victory in the Civil War, and later became our 18th President.
Professor Simpson, of Arizona State University, talks about Grant’s struggles to create a career after he left the Army in the early 1850s, and then how the force of his character allowed him to achieve a a string of victories early in the Civil War, that led him, ultimately to become the leader of the Union Forces in 1864, that brought the defeat of the Confederacy in 1865.
