Brad Cole of the IL Municipal League and Pat Devaney, representing Fire Fighters, discuss the need to restore the legal protections of the “Public Duty Rule” which for years, held that emergency personnel did not have an obligation to any individual to protect their life or property, but that the services would try to protect against threats that arise. A recent IL Sup Court ruling overturned the Public Duty Rule, which is feared could result in lawsuits against individual policemen, fire fighters, and cities, when an individual is not saved during some emergency.
