From Springfield: Illinois Channel Board Member, Katy Lawrence sits down with William Norwood, author of “Cleared for takeoff: A Pilot’s Story of Challenges and Triumph.” Mr. Norwood, the first African American pilot for United Airlines, recounts his early life in segregated Centralia, to his days at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale as the schools first African American Quarterback, and his time spent flying B-52s carrying nuclear weapons during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Mr. Norwood explains how he overcame adversity to achieve his dreams, and how today’s youth can do the same.
