Broadcast Journalism and Business Considerations

From the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston: former MSNBC President Richard Kaplan discusses balancing journalism's ethics with business responsibilities.  In this speech, Mr. Kaplan discusses what he says is the need for commercial broadcasters to gain ratings while still holding high journalistic standards.  Mr. Kaplan left MSNBC about three months after this speech was delivered.

The Illinois State Historical Society's Centennial Awards Dinner

From Chicago: the Illinois State Historical Society holds its annual Centennial Awards Dinner, which honors those organizations which have operated continuously in Illinois for 100 years or more.  Speaking at the dinner and receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award is Astronaut Jim Lovell, Commander of Apollo 13.  Following the dinner, we hear from some of those whose organizations were honored, and we talk with Captain Lovell about the space program and what he is now doing as a resident of Northern Illinois.

Regulating Dietary Supplements

The Crisis of Wrongful Conviction

From the University of Illinois at Springfield: Peter Neufeld, co-founder of the National Innocence Project, discusses his organization's ongoing efforts to gain freedom for those wrongfully convicted of crimes.  This organization's efforts led to former Governor George Ryan's moratorium on the use of the death penalty in Illinois, after it was shown that a number of those on Illinois' Death Row were innocent.

Impact of U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald on Illinois Government

From the Union League Club of Chicago: Former Senator Peter Fitzgerald discusses his having Patrick Fitzgerald appointed as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.  At the time the appointment was made, many were critical of Senator Fitzgerald for having an attorney appointed from outside Illinois.  Since his appointment, Patrick Fitzgerald has engaged in a number of high-profile investigations and indictments of Illinois political figures, including former Governor George Ryan.

Experiences as a WWII P.O.W. in Germany

From Springfield: a special story of service and sacrifice.  Chicagoan Dick Lockhart recounts his experiences in World War II as a member of the Army's 106th Infantry Division.  In December 1944, during the German counter-offensive known as the Battle of the Bulge, Dick Lockhart was taken prisoner and spent four months as a Prisoner of War, surviving in-part on "grass soup."

Applying Alternative-Energy Tax Credits to Liquid Fuel Made from Coal

From Capitol Hill in Washington, DC:  Illinois Congressman John Shimkus and two other members of Congress introduce legislation that would apply the existing Alternative Energy Tax Credit to liquid fuel made from coal.  Converting coal to  liquid fuel was a technique used by the Germans during World War II, and as an alternative to oil-based fuels, may greatly increase the demand for Illinois coal.

Mervis Industries, Inc.  This case concerns questions arising from a wrongful death action.  An employee of Mervis Industries, located in Vermillion County, was killed in an accident there in 2001.  However, the wrongful death action was filed in Cook County, where the decedent was a resident.  The legal question at issue is how the law determines the proper venue in such a case.
