The Illinois Channel began following a Planning Study, Co-Chaired by Gov Jim Edgar and Sen Paul Simon, that looked into establishing an "Illinois Channel" dedicated to providing coverage of state government modeled after C-SPAN. In January 2003, the Illinois Channel began operations as an independent, nonprofit organization.

Public Affairs programming on the Illinois Channel includes:

  • unedited coverage of legislative committee hearings
  • unedited coverage of the executive and judicial branches of state government
  • press conferences
  • public policy events taking place across Illinois
  • Illinois issues and congressional delegation in DC

Everyone benefits!

  • Growing numbers of citizens can now watch as their state government acts on issues affecting their lives: education, transportation, healthcare.
  • Illinoisans can now see and hear the speakers, seminars, and authors speaking on Illinois campuses.
  • Through video-streaming, the channel gives teachers access to programs on state government and public affairs issues for their classrooms.
  • Businesses and consumer groups can now follow legislative and regulatory action on a variety of issues.
