IDNR’s new Director on Re-energizing Illinois’ Dept of Natural Resources

Springfield – We go One-on-One with Colleen Callahan, who became the Director of the Department of Natural Resources in March. As with many departments in state government, the past budget standoffs and lack of a capital bill for 10 years, has resulted in a demoralized workforce, and state park facilities becoming worn with – as Director Callahan notes — over $1 billion in deferred maintenance.

In this frank interview, Director Callahan, shares her excitement for the job as well as the challenges to reestablish IDNR as a smooth functioning department, that will soon have the funds to begin updating park buildings, hiring more employees, and improving the experience for visitors bringing their families to some of the 300-plus parks located across the state.
