Illinois’ Fiscal Crisis, Broken Budgeting Process and Growing Political Divisions

Springfield: We go InDepth with State Rep Chad Hays (R) as he shares his experience of serving in the Illinois House. Our interview comes in the context of a significant number of Republican incumbents who decided they would not run again.

Rep Hays is one of those Republicans who decided he would not seek re-election. He relays the growing frustration among House members of both parties, over the political gamesmanship that has defined so much of the last decade. The endless political battles between Gov Rauner and Speaker Madigan, the growing frustration of the inability to get things done to help advance the state, and the growing cost of fundraising against a backdrop of a billionaire holding office, who can threaten to run a candidate against you if you dare to vote against their wishes.

Rep Hays explains how our Democracy is no working as it’s supposed to, and why it is increasingly difficult to get good people to seek political office.
